U.S. Highway 501 realignment from Broadway Street to 7th Avenue
One of the Ride 3 projects, the U.S. Highway 501 realignment from Broadway Street to 7th Avenue has just started early phases of construction. This project will realign U.S. Hwy. 501 at the Broadway Street intersection to connect to 7th Avenue North at Oak Street in the City of Myrtle Beach (new alignment). This Ride 3 project will also install sidewalks and intersection improvements on 7th Avenue North, between Oak Street and North Kings Highway.
Initial work that is just now starting will involve the replacement of water and sewer lines along 7th Avenue North and will also involve the addition of storm drainage to select portions of Kings Highway and Broadway Street.
The anticipated completion of this realignment project is September 2026 - weather permitting.
The road projects in Horry County are defined as Ride Improvement & Development Effort (RIDE). There have been two previous “road project phases” (RIDE 1 and RIDE 2) that have already been completed. Current road projects are included in the RIDE 3 road project phase. RIDE 3 is being funded by a one cent capital project sales tax. Horry County maintains a detailed RIDE 3 “Dashboard” such that residents can view the current status of all RIDE 3 road projects. Plans for a subsequent RIDE 4 are already being discussed.
This Highway 501 realignment road project will not only simplify travel, but will serve as a key foundational element for future development of the Arts and Innovations District (part of the Downtown Myrtle Beach Master Plan).
The Arts and Innovations District is in the design stages to create a vibrant and thriving urban center that capitalizes on diversity and serves residents and visitors for many years. Early on proposals for the Arts and Innovation District will include new city offices, a new library, a new museum or two, a performing arts center, a co-work space for entrepreneurs and a new city square for events and activities.
