Surfworks coming to Myrtle Beach - 2024 Summer Update

Surfworks, South Carolina's first surf & adventure park, continues to stay on track to open in the heart of America's favorite family beach destination, Myrtle Beach.  The question is….when!

The new surf park, powered by Wavegarden, will offer perfect waves all day, every day.  This facility will be the ideal place for learning to surf and progressing rapidly.

A couple of years back the highly anticipated opening of this new surf park was in the news and people were excited for the grand opening.  The excitement has tapered as the advertised opening dates came and went.  The company has not provided any new updates to the public, but there has been some promising activity behind the scenes that could rejuvenate some of the excitement!

First off, a Purchase Agreement has been in place for the City of Myrte Beach to sell land to Surfworks Land Holdings LLC (Buyer) to build a surf park since 2022.

The Buyer already has a land disturbance permit in place to begin site work once financing is secured.  The Buyer is continuing with design, engineering and permitting.  The Buyer has been delayed with securing final financing due to rising construction costs and interest rates, but remains interested with the project as is being evidence by recent activity to move the closing date and to add additional earnest monies, demonstrating good faith.

Some more detailed background on the timing and ordinance changes to establish a revised closing date is as follows:

In September of 2022, Myrtle Beach City Council approved an Ordinance to authorize the execution of the Purchase Agreement to sell 21.6 acres (off of Burroughs and Chapin Boulevard across Robert Grissom Parkway from Broadway at the Beach) to MHI Capital, Inc for $4.5 million for the construction of a surf park.

In April of 2023, Myrtle Beach City Council approved an extension to require a closing prior to October 9. 2023.  Myrtle Beach City Council subsequently approved an extension in October 2023 to require a closing prior to April 25, 2024 that included an additional $150,000 of non-refundable earnest money.  Subsequently, an extension has been requested for an additional 12 months to close on the property by April 30, 2025, and offered $100,000 as additional non-refundable earnest money due by October 30, 2024.  In May 2024, the 1st and 2nd readings to amend the ordinance to reflect this closing date change and earnest money change were both approved.
