Myrtle Beach celebrated its birthday yesterday, March 12. It has now been 87 years since Myrtle Beach was incorporated as an official South Carolina town. Before incorporation, Myrtle Beach was more of an informal community without self-governing authority.

On June 1, 1957, Myrtle Beach subsequently became incorporated as a city when the permanent population on Myrtle Beach exceeded 5,000. For Myrtle Beach, this change reflected its growth into a major tourist destination, managing increasing visitors, businesses, and local services.

According to the latest US Census estimates, the city of Myrtle Beach’s 2024 population was nearly 39,000. Of course cities nearby, i.e. Conway, North Myrtle Beach, etc. now more than double that population.

Myrtle Beach continues to experience significant growth, with numerous new home communities emerging to accommodate the influx of residents.
